Activated on April 4, 1944, to conduct strategic bombardment against Japan, the Twentieth Air Force (20th AF) was a pivotal U.S. Army Air Forces command in WWII. Commanded directly by General Henry "Hap" Arnold, it operated Boeing B-29 Superfortresses from India, China, and the Marianas. It was responsible for the strategic bombing campaign against the Japanese mainland and launched the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
