To recognize the hazardous duties of flying in combat, the Navy authorized the Combat Aircrew Badge (also awarded to U.S. Marine Corps aircrew).Design: The badge featured a silver or gold pin of a winged shield, with a circular escutcheon (shield) at the center.Requirements: Personnel were initially required to have at least three months of service as a regularly assigned aircrew member in a combatant aircraft or sustain combat-related injuries.Combat Stars: Unit commanders could authorize the addition of up to three small silver/bronze stars on the badge to denote specific engagements with enemy aircraft, ships, or fortified shore positions.
